Before you begin, here’s everything you need to know
We at Timepieces believe that a watch is more than just an instrument to measure time. To us, watches are symbols of elegance worthy of being passed down from one generation to the next. Therefore, it is important to know how you can care for your watch.
Here are 10 tips to get you started
-
KEEP YOUR WATCH WOUND
A manual winding watch should be rewound completely every day. We recommend winding it at the same time each day before placing it on the wrist and ensuring it is fully wound each time. To do this, wind your watch until some resistance is felt. Be careful not to force the crown too hard as this could cause damage to the mainspring and gear train of the movement.
For automatic winding watches, we recommend you wear your watch every day so the movement of your wrist can continuously wind your watch. Another option is to use a watch winder which uses a motor to constantly keep your watch rotating and keep it wound. If your watch stops, you should rotate the crown a few times to wind the watch and start the movement before setting the time and wearing the watch.
-
CLEAN YOUR WATCH
Try to clean your watch daily with a soft cloth to remove any dirt or dust that have accumulated over the day. Sometimes small particles may find their way into the lugs or even in between the links of the bracelet.
-
KEEP AWAY FROM MAGNETS
Every mechanical watch utilizes a series of metal components to function. Therefore exposure to a strong magnetic field may interfere with the precision of the watch or even completely stop it from working. One of the signs to look out for is if you notice your watch running fast, and perhaps followed by a complete stop. If you see this, your watch may have been magnetized. We recommend bringing it to our service center for demagnetization.
-
CHECK THE WATER RESISTANCE
The water resistance rating on a watch is not necessarily permanent. With normal wear and tear, your watch may lose its resistance to water pressure over time. Do have your watch checked occasionally before prolonged immersion in any body of water.
-
PROTECT THE CRYSTAL
Sapphire crystal may be incredibly hard but you should still take every precaution to protect your watch from any direct impact to the crystal to avoid scratches and/or cracking.
-
STORE YOUR WATCH PROPERLY
When not wearing the watch, it is best to keep it inside the original box. This helps to protect it from accidental knocks and also shields it from humidity and dust.
-
STAY AWAY FROM CHEMICALS
Avoid contact between the watch and any type of chemicals. Soaps, detergents, cosmetics and perfumes may cause damage to the watch case and the bracelet or leather band.
-
SERVICE FREQUENTLY
Your watch needs to be serviced regularly to maintain the precision of the timekeeping. Moreover, regular servicing will refresh all the lubricant on the movement which can reduce wear and tear and potentially even permanent damage over an extended period. The frequency of servicing varies depending on the model of the watch. But, as a general rule, you should bring in your watch for servicing every two or three years. Make sure to only use authorized service centers as improper handling can cause even more damage.
-
TRUST THE PROFESSIONALS
When in doubt, always ask your authorized retailer and service center for advice regarding your watch. Trying to open and fix the watch yourself could potentially expose it to dust, dirt and particles that could damage the movement.
-
UNDERSTAND HOW YOUR WATCH WORKS
It is important to read your watch manual or ask any of our watch specialists for detailed information on how the watch works. There may be a special procedure to set certain functions of the watch and improper handling may damage the movement.
